Word Deduction: from controls to your first round

Start Word Deduction by looking at the playing area and its controls. Guess the five-letter answer in six attempts. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Keep the instructions close while learning this activity. Look at what changes after your first action.

Guess a five-letter answer from the included collection. Entries must contain five letters; accepted guesses are not checked against a complete dictionary.

Practice beyond the first move

Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round. Make the next step deliberately.

The purpose of your moves

Guess the five-letter answer in six attempts. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Check the rules when you are unsure.

The order of play

  1. Enter five letters.
  2. Green marks the correct position; gold marks an available copy elsewhere.
  3. Grey means no matching unused copy.
  4. Use the feedback to solve.

Making selections and moves

Type a guess and press Check guess or Enter. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Contact us with the game and device if a control does not respond.

See the idea in action

With APPLE as the answer and ALLEE as the guess, the first A and final E are in the right places. The extra L and E are not both counted as present. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Choose a deliberate next step.

Avoid this misunderstanding

Repeated letters do not imply unlimited copies in the answer. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow.
