Backgammon: rules and examples

Take a moment with Backgammon before moving to another game. Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Check the rule that explains your first action. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

Local two players; no doubling cube, stakes or remote matching.

Build familiarity through play

Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules. Keep the objective visible.

The purpose of your moves

Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Notice how the game responds to your input.

Work through the instructions

  1. Roll and use the maximum legal number of dice; doubles give four moves.
  2. Enter barred pieces first.
  3. Points with at least two enemies are blocked; a lone enemy is hit.
  4. Bear off only after all pieces reach home.

Your inputs

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. Use the control method described here for this activity. Look at the feedback after the action.

A useful example

When only one die can be used and either is individually playable, use the larger die. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Look for the relevant detail.

Keep this in mind

An oversized bear-off requires no piece farther from the exit. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal.
